Suzuki Piano and Traditional Piano
The Suzuki method, devised by Shinichi Suzuki, allows students as young as 2 or 3 to play the piano. The child listens to pieces he or she is playing and ”copies” the melody, tempo, phrasing, etc. Teaching this method for several years has allowed me to provide a creative and innovative approach. Depending on the student's age and readiness, I expose my students to notation in digestible form for his or her age, using other method books.
The traditional method allows students at age 5-6 to adult to play the piano. I introduce appropriate method books to enhance the lesson, emphasizing the importance of studying the music students want to learn.
Woodwinds
I teach beginning clarinet, intermediate oboe, bassoon and saxophone, as well as all levels of flute. Students are taught proper technique including development of breath support, good tone production, correct embouchure, posture and finger placement. Students learn basic theory, as well as solo pieces. Students establish good practice habits, through the private lesson and expectations involved outside of the lessons. Students are motivated by the opportunities provided to showcase their talent; fostering a real love of the instrument.
Guitar
I teach beginning guitar through late elementary. My students learn proper hand technique, correct tuning, note reading, fundamentals of music theory and basic chords. I find the balance between what the student wants to learn with what he/she really needs to know to be a successful guitar player. I create a specific strategy based on each student’s learning style in order to help the student get the most out of each lesson. I encourage each one to practice and continue to make progress toward their musical goals.
Brass
I teach beginning trumpet, trombone and french horn, as well as intermediate baritone and tuba. I truly believe that as teachers, we should take an individualistic approach to each student. I get a feel for the students’ prior knowledge and experience level, then design a course of study based on their needs. I provide the necessary technical skills, musical concepts, and creative encouragement to excel in the world of music. Opportunities are provided to perform in recitals.
Beginner's Percussion
The drums and bells are fun instruments to play. I teach beginners how to play using correct drumming posture, how to properly hold drumsticks and/or mallets, how to count beats and more! Lessons are customized depending on age and experience level. Through focus on note reading, chords and techniques, I instill in my students the tools they need to succeed throughout their musical journey.
